October 2019 Show & Tell

Leslie's latest finish is a quilt with "O"s in Ohio State colors. Ophelia then quilted it for her with "Ohio State."  Very nice gift for her oldest grandson who lives in Ohio.

Pattie showed off wallets she made, one in purple vinyl, next in cork, which is easier to work, and the last is vegetarian leather!

Ophelia's take on inspiration from Missouri Star quilts, using charm packs in her stash.  Went together quickly.

Ophelia showed us this "Painted Ladies" quilt of houses.  Used her Mom's rick-rack to decorate. Quilted in a light lemon yellow, adds a little color, courtesy of Angela Walters recommendation.  Is on both the bobbin and top thread.  Ophelia also made up the rick-rack quilt design on her long-arm. Pattern is at https://eyecandyquilts.com/painted-ladies

Ophelia's next was one she was preparing for retreat, but after she did a sample and mirror image, she finished it before retreat. It is the Jaybird quilt pattern "Three in a Box" -- http://www.jaybirdquilts.com/search?q=three+in+a+box  Ophelia said it went together quickly!

In the next quilt, Ophelia put blocks that Leslie gave her together and quilted it.  Pattern is "Fractured" Kathy Doughty in one of her first quilt books.  For other interpretations see this Pinterest page - https://www.pinterest.com/pin/447897125411882693/?lp=true

Lorie showed us the front and back of her finish, fabric from Mardens, backing shows off the quilting.  This is her "picnic" quilt, quilted with squares and circles using a free pattern with leftover fabrics she had.  Very fun!

Lorie also showed us her black and white Urban Nine Patch -- pattern at Sew Kind of Wonderful here  https://sewkindofwonderful.com/products/urban-nine-patch-paper-pattern?variant=804668063 .  The quilting was specifically designed for the pattern, but the difficulty was that the melon shapes on the edges of the squares are all slightly different. Dramatic design!

Robin shared with us her tied dye diamond quilt.  Super colorful!

Suzie showed a colorful finish with O shaped blocks.  The pops of red are great!

The front and back of Suzie's very cute fox quilt from the Sew Fresh Quilts "Fox Among the Birches" pattern -- https://sewfreshquilts.blogspot.com/2017/07/fox-among-birches-in-grey.html  .  Love the backing fabric!

Suzie's third quilt is this lovely gradated pink design with a much less subdued backing fabric!

Supplies for Our Make-and-Take Craft

At our next monthly meeting, on November 19th, we’ll each be making a set of 15 row markers to use when constructing quilts. If you’re planning on attending this meeting (and we hope you are!), please be sure to read this information so you’ll have what you need to participate in the make-and-take activity.

What to Bring

You’ll need 15 pieces of fabric to make your row markers, all cut to 1 3/4" x 5 3/4". Bring an extra one or two, just in case. Fold your pieces in half width-wise and press.

For our row markers, we’ll be using black letter stickers that are not backed in white (contrary to the number markers pictures here). Keep that in mind when selecting your fabric—lighter fabrics may work better than darker ones.

If You Have It on Hand to Share

If you have a laminating machine that you could bring to the meeting, please let Michelle know at frombolttobeauty [at] gmail [dot] com (even if you already told her). The more machines we have, the faster we’ll be able to assemble our projects.

Also, if you happen to have a single quarter-inch hand punch that you don’t mind using on plastic, please bring that.

If You Forget Your Supplies

If you forget your supplies or don’t have enough time to get them together, we will have some extra fabric on hand so that everyone will leave with a set of row markers. : )

Questions?

Drop Michelle an email at frombolttobeauty [at] gmail [dot] com

If you’d like to know more details about this craft, you can check out the tutorial we’ll be following here.

A Special Quilt for a Special Lady

Earlier this month, two dozen NHMQG members ventured to Cape Cod for our annual fall quilt retreat. As usual, the event was a huge success … We retreat goers chipped away at our WIPs. We ate nice meals. We took walks along the beach. And we bought more than our fair share of fabric at local quilt shops. : )

The place where we both sewed and stayed was the Lighthouse Inn in Dennis, MA. For many of us, a highlight of the weekend was presenting Judith, the person at the inn who organizes these retreats for us, with a quilt. It was our way of thanking her for seeing to our every need during these weekends away and for making these trips such memorable experiences (so much that we keep coming back year after year!).

What many of us did not know until we presented Judith with this gift is that this is her last season at the inn. We wish her all the best as she makes this move!

This project is Ahoy Sailor by Suzy Quilts and features fabric from Bonnie and Camille’s Daysail collection as well as selections from Loved to Pieces by Mathew Boudreax and Sirena by Jessica Swift. Many thanks to Michelle, Tiffany, René, and Ellen for their contributions in piecing, quilting, and completing this project. And a special thanks to Betsy for coordinating the trip on behalf of the guild.
