June 13, 2024 General Membership Meeting Recap

The meeting was led by Helen.

Raffle Winners

• Tracy won the door prize, a 10” rotating cutting mat, by Sue Daley.
• Brenda won the raffle for the Alison Glass Sunprint 2024 Fat Quarter Bundle.
• Gail won the raffle for the Tula Pink Wildflower Fat Quarter Bundle and a $25 Fat Quarter Shop gift card.

General Topics

• Starting at this meeting, we are swapping the order of Programming and Show and Tell. Programming will go first.
• Helen asked members to sign up to provide food and beverages at upcoming meetings and passed a sign-up sheet around.
• Lost and Found Someone left a very nice table lamp behind at the May retreat. Let us now if you are missing your lamp! Robin left a bag with stamps for label making at the retreat – does anyone know who took the bag home?

Membership (Marie, Treasurer)

• Everything is going well. We have reached our 65-member cap. Two people are on the waitlist. We can have guests, and they can be added to the waitlist, if they wish.

Secretary (Mary Lou)

• Everything is going well.

Events and Programming (Karen G, Laurie K, and Susan)

• Karen G is moving to Tennessee later this month to be closer to her family and is stepping down from the Board. She will maintain her guild membership status. Thank you for your work on the Board, and best wishes, Karen!
• Laurie reminded members who recently started their 10th Anniversary Quilt Challenge quilt to select a Fat Quarter from her tote bag.
• Next month’s activity will be our annual ice cream social at Greeley Park in Nashua, starting at 6:30 PM. Bring a lawn chair, insect repellant, and your Show and Tell items. We will be meeting on the west side of Concord Street, near the bathrooms, across the street from the pavilion, near the “Sensory Gardens.” Look for the balloons and friendly faces! If there is bad weather in the forecast, be sure to check your email before heading to Greeley Park – we may be meeting in the church instead.

Communications (Brenda and Susie)

• Brenda emailed a link to our guild directory. Please check it out and let us know if anything is incorrect or missing from your profile.
• Brenda emailed a link to an anonymous member survey to ask about your experience with the guild and asked for suggestions on anything we could do better. Please complete the survey by Monday, June 17th.

News from the Modern Quilt Guild

• There is a brand new member forum for all of MQG.  Check it out at MQG Community.
• June 17-23 is Quilt Label week! There is a new on-demand video about quilt labelling. The MQG is inviting all members to share in the new MQG Community and on social media using #LabelMyQuilts.
• The annual Make-A-Difference Challenge is happening now.  It is an individual quilt design challenge that entry fees benefit Wild Earth Allies.  This years theme is Pollinators. Quilt pictures are due in mid-August and all of modern quilt guild membership votes on the winners with a variety of product packages going to 1st through 10th place!
• Registration for MQG QuiltCon 2025 in Phoenix opens July 31 at 10 AM. If you are planning to attend, log on early to get the best opportunity to sign up for classes and lectures.
• There is 
• There are various QuiltCon challenge opportunities, including individual and group efforts. For details, check out QuiltCon 2025.
• We are again planning to submit a Community Outreach quilt. The theme is “Lines and Bars.” Brenda will send out info about the challenge. Please send any design ideas you have to the guild email address by June 23rd.

Charity

• Several charity quilts were completed this month, and Carol K delivered them to the Sleep in Heavenly Peace project. 

• Simone has planned an open sew day for June 29th at her studio to make quilts for the Merrimack Community Hospice House. She has selected two easy quilts from Donna Robertson’s popular “3-yard-quilts” books. Contact Simone if you’d like to donate fabric or participate.

Programming Activities

• This meeting’s activity was a “round-robin” of four different quilt binding/finishing options: Fiber edging by Marie, Facing by Susie, Faux Flange by Kim, and complete machine binding by Michelle.

Show and Tell

• Shelly and Sonia are helping with the Nashua Greeley Park Art Show August 17-18 this summer. Sonia is Vice-President for the Nashua Area Artists Association, which sponsors the event, and Shelly is involved in the kid’s competition. 1. Carol K showed us her Bonnie Hunter scrappy House Quilt (a free pattern!).

2. Susie showed us a Plus quilt, a finished WIP! (The pattern looks similar to this one or this one)

3. Amanda showed her Taking Wing butterfly and Flame Seeker moth wall hangings (designed by lillyella)

4.     Laurie M was very busy this month, as always, and showed us 4 quilts. First up is a quilt (a WIP!) made using blocks from the Easter Parade quilt block patterns (bunny block pattern and carrot block pattern) from Center Street Quilts to go with the book Creepy Carrots!

5. Next up, one of her favorite Bjorn Bears quilts (from Elizabeth Hartman) in yellow.

6.     And a quilt made from a cut up Heart and Soul panel (from Deena Rutter for Riley Blake) of spiritual quotes.

7.     And the start of a Peanut Butter quilt! (from Then Came June)

8. Lori B showed us her black and white Goodnight Irene Quilt (free video tutorial from Missouri Star Quilt Co). 

9. Liz showed us a baby quilt made from fabric she got at one of our yard sales.

10. Ophelia showed us two Satomi Patchwork Mugs quilts, one in reds.

11.    And one in greens with no hearts!

12. Patty M showed us three quilts. First, a green and blue plaid quilt she designed from a disappearing nine-patch block (a WIP!).

13.    Then a Lasagna quilt with borders she made with scraps and an equally interesting pieced backing.

14.    And finally, an Upscale Plaid quilt designed by Lo & Behold Stitchery.

15. Rene showed us her Violet quilt, from a Kitchen Table Quilting.

16. Shelly showed us the first quilt she designed and completely finished herself. We saw her working on it at the last retreat. Congratulations!

17. Simone showed us one of the altered 3 yard quilt patterns (Sew Quick from the 3-yard Quilt Favorites book) she's going to be using for the open sew day for June 29th at her studio to make quilts for the Merrimack Community Hospice House

18. Simone showed us her Very Hungry Caterpillar quilt, made from fabrics of the same name. She set fussy cut blocks into the centers of stars.

19. Robin finished two of her WIPs! One was the Chain Reaction quilt from Donna Robertson's Modern Views with 3-Yard Quilts book made with New England Patriot’s fabric.

20.    Gail showed us an improv quilt from a Maria Shell class, Game of Improv. The improv quilt included studies similar to the ones shown in the classic Josef Albers’ Interaction of Color book.

21.    Gail also showed a quilt study she mounted on canvas.

22.    Robin's other WIP was the Delight quilt, from Donna Robertson’s The Magic of 3-Yard Quilts book.

June Meeting and Raffle Items

The meeting was led by Helen.

There were 38 members in attendance.

We also had three guests. Two joined at the meeting – Welcome Cindy and Amanda!

Raffle Winners

·       Sarah won the door prize, the Handy Zipper Jig by The Gypsy Quilter and a roll of Zipper tape by Sallie Tomato.

·       Lynn won the raffle for the Moda Flirtation Fat Quarter Bundle.

·       Susie won the raffle for the Simply Tidy Hudson Cart.

 

Membership (Marie, Treasurer)

·       At the start of the meeting, we are at 63 paid members. Two of the three guests joined at the meeting, so we have now reached our membership cap of 65. Any new prospective members will be placed on a waiting list.

·       When membership renewals are due in December, the first 65 people (current members or waitlist prospective members) who pay will be granted membership.

Secretary (Mary Lou)

·       The new By-Laws are now in effect. Phew!

Events and Programming (Karen G, Laurie K, and Susan)

·       Laurie reminded people about the 10^th Anniversary Quilt Challenge. Anyone who has started a quilt will get a choice of a Fat Quarter at the meeting after which you start working on your quilt.

·       Laurie also reminded us to let us know at Show & Tell when you have finished one of your WIPs.

Communications (Brenda and Susie)

·       Brenda will be sending out an anonymous member survey to ask about preferred meeting locations and days.

·       Brenda told us the MQG is having another charity quilt challenge, and she will organize it again this year. The theme this year is LINES AND BARS, with the below color scheme. She sent around a sign-up sheet for participation.

Retreats (Ophelia)

·       Spring retreat was a lot of fun. 40 members attended. The Fall Retreat will be in November.

Charity

·       Julie told us about the Hugs of Love project. Their goal is to provide quilts to military families who are staying at the Fisher House Boston, while their military loved ones are receiving in-patient treatment at Boston hospitals. Twin- to queen-size quilts are needed. They will accept fabric as well as completed quilts.

·       Chelsea told us about how she and Leslie donated many of our charity quilts to several families who were displaced from their homes by fires on Cross Street in Nashua in April. Counselors at The Pennichuck Middle School approached Chelsea and managed the effort. They sent us a wonderful Thank You note.

·       Simone talked to a hospice nurse at the Community Hospice House in Merrimack. They have been washing their limited supply of quilts and reusing them as they receive new patients. They would love quilts sized 54 x 70 for their patients.

Meeting Activities

·       This meeting’s activity was a presentation by Brenda and Ophelia on ways to change block sizes. Ophelia showed us the spreadsheet she uses, based on using a “Magic Number Multiplier.” Brenda handed out a handy set of worksheets to change sizes using ratios and a calculator. Brenda wants us to fill in the worksheets!

·       At the June meeting we will have a “round-robin” of five different quilt binding/finishing options.

Show and Tell

1. Sonia showed us three small quilts she made from a Laurel Berch panel.

2. Mary Lou showed us her Make quilt, by Kristy Lea of Quiet Play Designs.

3. Ashley showed her sawtooth star quilt made with Hoist the Sails pirate fabric.

4.  Mary Ellen showed us a WIP she started in a retreat two years ago: a queen-sized red and white stars quilt.

5. Suzanne showed us her Town Square quilt made with the same Hoist the Sails fabric as Ashely. This is a 3-yard quilt by Fabric Cafe.  She also made an adorable dog label for it!

6. Simone showed us another Sandhill Sling bag she made. Pattern by noodlehead.

7.  Raya showed us a pink and blue quilt.

8. And a flying geese quilt she started in a QuiltCon class this February using the Buzzing Geese pattern from Storied Quilts.

9.    Beth showed us her version of the Secret Agent quilt designed by Modern Quilt Studio and the color palette she started with to set up the transparency effect. Mary Lou also showed hers again to compare the two.

10. Patty M showed her Lily Quilt by Alderwood Studio.

11. Leslie showed us a charity quilt she made with the Scrap Crazy 4-Patch RulerScrap Crazy 4-Patch Ruler.

12. Chelsea showed us three quilts. The first was her enlarged version of the small Dinosaurs quilt pattern by Elizabeth Hartman. She used Ophelia’s quilt resizing system.

13. And a hand-quilted Daybreak quilt from Cozy Quilt Designs.

14. And a WIP, the Posh Penelope quilt, by Sew Kind of Wonderful.

15. Barbara showed us her first ever completed quilt top, an I Spy quilt. Congratulations!

16. Maura showed us two hand-quilted quilts. One from a cut-up panel from the Merrymaking line by Gingiber for Moda.

17. And a Jelly Filled quilt (a free pattern that we used for the scrappy challenge last year!) with Flora Dora fabrics.

18. Holly showed us her Cupola Views quilt, made with fabric designed from space photographs taken by astronaut and quilter Karen Nyberg.

19. Ophelia showed Noble Fir by Robin Pickens.

20. Ophelia also showed the Echo quilt from the Quilt Giving book by Deb Fisher.

21. And a WIP, her Maggie quilt by Kitchen Table Quilting. She used the quilt enlarging system she showed us at the meeting to make this twin-sized quilt.

22. Julie showed a WIP: The Metro Medallion quilt by Sew Kind of Wonderful.

23. Julie also showed us a pink and gray charity quilt.

Secretary (Mary Lou)

By-Laws Voting. We had a quorum of members, so we voted on the proposed revisions. The proposal passed, 37-0. Thank you to everyone who carefully reviewed the proposal and voted for it. It will be effective May 1, 2024, when the Board of Directors certifies the vote.

Events and Programming (Karen G, Laurie K, and Susan)

10 Year Anniversary Celebration at October Meeting!

• We clarified that the objective of the 10th Anniversary Quilt Challenge is not really competition for “Best,” but to have fun. Everyone who participates will receive something for completion.

• We will be putting together a slide show to celebrate milestones over the past 10 years. If you have any photos that you’d like us to include, please send them to our guild address: nhmodernquilt@gmail.com

Meeting Activities

• Round-Robin of Quilting techniques: We had five tables set up to highlight various quilting techniques and tools. It looked like everyone enjoyed this educational event. See the bottom of this recap for pictures and videos from each of the stations.

• WIP Challenge: Karen described the challenge: Select three WIPS you want to finish by October. She handed out paper for us to write down our WIPs as well as a form to keep track of progress on these projects. You must bring your completed WIP to a meeting Show & Tell to be eligible for prizes!

Communications (Brenda and Susie)

• Brenda is completing the membership directory and will send out a link to everyone.

Retreats (Ophelia) 

• Spring retreat will be at the Franciscan Guest House in Kennebunk, ME, on May 2-5. 40 members have signed up! This is the largest number ever (beating the previous high of 34).

• Ophelia will send out an email with details on arrival times and a suggested packing list.

• She will bring left-over supplies from the January label-making activity for anyone to use. Bring fabric (and freezer paper, if you have some) if you want to play.

Show and Tell

Carol K reported that she just dropped off 20 charity quilts for Sleep in Heavenly Peace!

Carol K also told us about an upcoming lecture by Pamela Weeks (from the New England Quilt Museum) on Civil War Soldiers’ Quilts. It will be held on April 17 at 9:30 AM at the Messiah Lutheran Church in Amherst. Click for details.

Meghan told us about an estate sale happening May 11th in Vermont for a quilter who is going into assisted living. See Meghan for more information.

Beth L told us she had three of her quilts in the New England Quilt Expo. This event was held April 11-13 in Manchester.

Laurie M showed us the June American Patchwork & Quilting issue featuring her Rainbow Rails quilt.

Brenda told us about some news from the MQG. They will be offering a label making program in May and June. There will be on-demand videos, Show & Tell, and other events. Watch for an email from the MQG in early May. Also, the MQG announced that the 2026 QuiltCon will be back in Raleigh, NC, after being in Phoenix, AZ for 2025.

1. Jenny showed a quilt she made with minky made from the Walk About Quilt pattern from Grizzly Gulch Gallery.
2. Shelly is off to an early, great start on her Anniversary Challenge Quilt. It’s an applique quilt with a  tree and a sun.
3. Carol K showed us her baby-sized Trip Around the World quilt, with a label she made at our January label-making activity. 

4. She also showed us some wool ornaments she made.

5. Raya showed us two quilts. One was a blue and white sampler quilt she designed for her son who is graduating from college in May. She made the label during the January meeting.

6. She also showed us a tiny hexie wall hanging.

7. Robin showed a butterfly applique quilt that she is donating to charity using Ruby Star Society Tiger Fly panels.
8. Lisa showed her hexie lap quilt, Science Fair by Jaybird Quilts.

9. Meghan showed a flying geese wall hanging

10. She also showed us a large rainbow quilt top she is making for a friend.
11. Meghan is getting to know her new embroidery machine. She showed quilt labels she made, plus two lion’s head embroideries, which she will make into a quilt.

12.  Lynn showed us her Popsicle Sticks quilt.
13. Holly showed us her lap quilt that she experimented with techniques to make it appear three dimensional.

14. Martha showed us a quilt and some photographs of how she designs quilts in Canva and assigns different values to fabric. There's also a detail of the quilting in progress. The quilt pattern is Globe by Zen Chic.

15. Patty M showed her 15-year old Chandelier quilt, finished at last. The pattern appears to be Sunrise Quilt Pattern By Elizabeth Huff & Wynema Bean featured in Quilt Sampler magazine in 2014.

16. Betsy showed us her Elizabeth Hartman Produce Section quilt. She completed it as a BOM through Sewtopia.

17. Betsy also shared the Bunny Bunch quilt, also by Elizabeth Hartman.

18. She also showed us her Fab Farm quilt, also by Elizabeth Hartman. That kit was one of raffles this month!

19. Sarah showed us her Denyse Schmidt Free Wheeling Single Girl quilt.

20. Marie showed us a pretty green baby quilt.

21. Susie showed us some small quilts made using the animal patterns in Elizabeth Hartman’s Spectacular Savannah pattern. She showed the wide facing on the back of one of them, which keeps the wall hanging flat.
