March 2017 Show & Tell

March was a busy month for show and tell! Our members brought many of their first quilts to show and their latest quilts. Let's see them!

Gail gave away her first quilt so she wanted to share her latest WIP. These blocks are from the Maureen Cracknell sew along. 

Diane's first quilt was from Family Circle Magazine in 1986 and it was lost by her in laws! She brought one of her early makes with her and more recently she worked on this fun quilt top at retreat. 

Nancy always gives her quilts away so she brought one early make that she still has. She also brought in a new bag that she made that could carry a baby! 

Sue was visiting us in March. She is a QuiltCon winner for her appliqué and we were thrilled to see her work.

Deb is about to be a first time grandmother and made these two quilts for her grandchild to be!

Janice started quilting in 1989 and made this quilt 3 years ago for her daughter, but she didn't use it!!

Patty made her first quilt in 1995 or 1996 during a "quilt in a day" class at Covered Bridge Quilting. She took the class with a friend and her friend didn't finish. When her friend passed away Patty finished her quilt too.

She also shared a baby quilt for her daughters college roommate and the mini she received at QuiltCon.

Marie started quilting 20 years ago and used old ties to make this quilt for her husband. Her boy and step daughters actually played Twister to make the hand and feet shapes! For contrast she brought in her newest quilt that used circles.

Michelle gave this green quilt to her friend and borrowed it to bring for Show & Tell. It had been very loved! She also shared her 9-patch challenge quilt that was hung at QuiltCon.

Mary Jean's first quilt was for her daughter, but she no longer has it so she brought in the first quilt she made for herself! Mary Jean and fellow member Nancy met through this quilt. Her last quilt is this beautiful Cotton + Steel snowflake quilt with flannel on the back. 

Tracy started quilting in the early 90s quilting with her mother in law and in 1998 bought her own sewing machine. She's recently been trying her hand at modern! And she also shared her Riley Blake challenge, in which she used every bit of fabric. The picture came out very blurry though so please take my word for it!

Betsy made this quilt using Briar Rose fabrics for her daughter and more recently made these hearts for her daughter and granddaughter. 

Lisa didn't realize this would be tough for a beginner quilt, but she kept going and it became a favorite of her husband! It was 1987 and she didn't know how to bind so she just went with it. Her most recent quilt is an incredible shape and she's not sure what to do with it yet.

Susie moved away and took up sewing and then came back to NH and sewed with Patty.

Rene's first quilt was made in 1977 and finished by hand two years late. She also brought some fabulous newer quilts to share, including Labyrinth. 

Pat John made an her first quilt, Around The World Quilt in a day, and tied it in the 1980's. She took it up again when she retired and recently made this Cat in the Hat quilt for her grandson.

Chelsea and her grandmother made this quilt together for her to bring to college.

Ellen brought in one of her early quilts and some of the cool fabric she died at QuiltCon!

Ellen started quilting when she was pregnant and most recently here is her finished block of the month from a few  years ago.

Bridgett  brought in the first quilt that that she machine quilted.

Mary Louise has twin daughters that she made some of her first quilts for. She loves Camille Ross Kelly and 1930's prints in vibrant shades. She also volunteers with Neighbors Helping Newborns making quilts!

Nancy T made garments and wanted to turn her scraps into a quilt before she moved in the 1980's. Her next share was started by her mother and she finished it after she passed away. Her newest quilt was made with a jelly roll!

April Meeting Reminder

Our April meeting will take place on Tuesday the 18th!

Pixie Basket: During our April meeting those who are participating in the Pixie Basket swap will have a chance to interview their partner. Nancy has prepared sample questions, but feel free to come ready for your own. When you're ready to get sewing the Pixie Basket tutorial can be found here.

Trip To NYC: Alison has been busy planning a trip for 2018 to NYC! Based on everyone's responses there are two time frames that would work best. If we go February 23rd-25th the cost for transportation and hotel will be $350. If we go May 11th-13th the cost for transportation and hotel will be $650. Alison will take a vote on Tuesday night!

Heather Jones Workshop: Our workshop with Heather Jones is next weekend! There are 4 spots available if you'd like to signup. 

Giveaways & Raffles: Our giveaway item will be a mystery present that was left by a member who departed for California! We will also have two raffles!

Boston Modern Quilt Guild Annual Show 2017

The Boston Modern Quilt Guild's Annual Show is opening on April 8 and will run every weekend through May 7, with the exception of Easter Sunday. It will be held at Fabric Place Basement in Natick MA.  Please join their guild for a reception on April 8 or on any weekend.  

The BMQG is also raffling off a beautiful quilt this year - the modern churn dash that was displayed at last year's show.   

If your guild would like to make a road trip during the week, please let Karen Leavitt know (kkleaveit@yahoo.com) and she can arrange to meet you there and give you a private showing. 

March 2017 Meeting Reminder

Our March meeting will take place on Tuesday, March 21st. There are quite a few fun activities planned my quilty friends!

The Pixie Basket Swap: 
This is a social swap, with the goal of getting to know one more person in our amazing guild!  If you would like to participate, I'll be passing the signup sheet at Tuesday night's meeting.  You'll be paired up with someone and in April will search them out at the meeting, spend a little time getting to know them and then make a Pixie Basket for them and fill it with goodies totaling no more than ten dollars.  The baskets will be exchanged at the May meeting.  If you want to be involved, but won't be at the March meeting, just send Nancy an email at finelydonequilting@comcast.net.

Show & Tell, First and Last:

It's all about show and tell this month!  Please bring in one of your first quilts you ever made and one (or more!) of your last quilts made!  Be ready to share the story of how you got started quilting.  What/who was your inspiration? How long ago was that?  Were you always a "modern" quilter? Or when did you notice your tastes changing?  We're really looking forward to the quilts and stories!

Charity Quilt:
Our charity committee has decided on the pattern for our next charity quilt that will be donated to the First Baptist Church and they will be passing out fabric packets this month. They would like the blocks back at our May meeting.

• Speaking of saving the date, Anna Marie Horner will be here for a workshop in April 2018. We're partnering with other guilds to bring this renowned quilter to the area and are excited to share more information. 
• The First Baptist church is hosting a yard sale on April 1, and they have invited us to donate items and to come to the event! You can find more information on their website here.

December 2016 Show & Tell

Welcome to our belated December meeting recap, complete with Show & Tell and party pictures! We had a great time at our December meeting and holiday party. 

There were games, gifts, treats and of course our monthly show & tell!

Our quilt for Bridges January gala just needs to be bound!

Marie shared her Michael Miller Challenge quilt and two Lost In The Big Woods quilts.

Carolyn shared her finished Icy Waters quilt!

Jesse made this quilt as a present for her sons girlfriend. 

Janice used the leftovers from a tree skirt she made for her daughter to make this also for her daughter

Ann is leaving us for Minnesota, but she shared this tulip quilt at her last meeting with NHMQG!

Sue used all flannels for a quilt for her brother and Monkey Business also for her brother. 

The skulls are for her daughter 

Eileen has been working on this African Wax quilt for 6 years and she finished and it came out great!

Annick travel challenge used clothes labels to show where they came from. 

Renee made this ceramics for her mom with quilt blocks on it when she was in high school and found it when she was cleaning recently!

Carolanne made two Christmas quilts with the Twister tool and used a vintage dress pattern to make a dress for Christmas Eve.

Mary Jean made this quilt using Tinsel from Cotton + Steel.

Michelle used PG&J and grunge for this modern quilt.

Patty worked on this Rifle Paper Co quilt at our Fall Retreat 

Kim made this quilt for her niece with the same fabrics she made her a baby quilt with!

Her second show was for her sons teacher. 

We had another garment share this month from Nancy Tatro with her wonderful pants!
She also shared a quilt made with manor House Jelly Rolls.

Betty used a jelly roll with added black for this quilt.

Betty also shared this Sassquash that she made for her daughter. 

Amy Garro gave Chelsea some fabric when she visited us for a paper piecing class last summer and she used it to make this lovely quilt!

We pulled the winner of our WIPs contest and we had 46 finished projects! This program was a great way to get our members motivated to finish their projects in 2016.

February Meeting Reminder

Since we had to cancel our January meeting due to snow, our first meeting of 2017 will take place on Tuesday the 21st!

Our new board has a lot of exciting news to share and fun activities are planned.

Yard Sale: We've had a whole month longer to clean out our sewing rooms and stashes and more importantly to identify whats missing! 

As a reminder, all proceeds will benefit  programming in 2017 and anything left at the end of the evening will be donated to the NH Women's Correctional Facility.

We will be accepting quilting cottons and flannels of any type (it doesn't have to be "modern") and scraps 2 1/2" or bigger packaged in plastic bags.  These will be selling for 50 cents an ounce; magazines no older than five years and with all pages intact and patterns will sell for $1; quilting and general sewing books are priced at $3 each.  If you have extra notions, (rulers, cutters, mats, hoops, needles etc.) please price these yourself.  And Tuesday will be a great opportunity to recycle any projects you've lost interest in (otherwise known as UFO's!)  These will be sold on a name your donation basis.  Please bring a bag to take your purchase home in!  We will be accepting cash and checks for yard sale purchases!
