Workshop with Mr. Domestic - April 17, 2021

All, we have scheduled a workshop with Mr. Domestic for Saturday, April 17 via Zoom connection.

He will share his experience in doing weaving of fabric strips in 2 axes and 3 axes.  The latter, in particular, can create some very cool designs.

February Programming - 'Share the Love'

Ever wondered what your membership in the "mother guild," the Modern Quilt Guild, gets you? We are here to tell you! We'll guide you through their website and show you all the resources available from the MQG so you can make the most of your MQG membership.

Do you miss talking to members at meetings and retreats about their latest inspiration? Are you wishing you could ask about that newest designer you heard just about? At February's meeting, we'll do a bunch of sharing. 

Please bring to the meeting what is inspiring and exciting YOU lately. 

- a great book of patterns or other quilty inspiration (doesn't have to be new; could even be a go-to you've used a "million" times!)

- online resources you use when you are "stuck" (you tube videos? shop web pages?)

- the name(s) of designers you love to follow on social media

- a pattern that has really gotten your attention recently!

We'll all share what we find exciting, and share the love!

LUKE HAYNES

Subverting the traditional quilting form by integrating modern concepts, Luke's art transforms the comfortably familiar into the visually evocative. He was born and raised across the American South. With a formal training in art and architecture at Cooper Union, New York, Haynes continues to experiment with quilting art while exploring art and architecture across the globe.

A chance encounter with a box of fabric remnants sparked Mr. Haynes' imagination. His first quilt, measuring 7′ x 10′, led him through years of experimentation and improvements over the years that he has been quilting.  Further honing his style, Mr. Haynes developed a system to piece manageable parts into a larger whole, applying a modern design sense to a familiar process. He uses reclaimed materials from the communities he works with in his projects to speak with the textile language of the area.

Luke will take us through his journey, speak to his "quilts as art" goals, and show us numerous examples of his extraordinary quilts.

We had a well attended December Zoom meeting.  The main part of our program was a video by Yvonne Fuchs on "Curved Piecing: Beyond the Drunkard's Path."    NOTE that the video is within the members only part of the MQG website -- all NHMQG members are also members of MQG, so if you haven't developed an account you should be able to sign in and view this and other videos (there is a huge amount of material on the website).  Yvonne's Resource List is also available on the MQG website.  Above is a picture of Sesen, one of Yvonne's newest quilts with curves.  See also Yvonne's page of quilt patterns available for sale.

We had a very spirited raffle this month for three items won by Karen A., Susan H., and Marie J.! Thanks to all who participated.

 

 

December 2020 Meeting and Raffle

Lucy Boston EPP and Gemology

 During the summer and fall, guild members participated in two sew alongs to build skills: Lucy Boston (English Paper Piecing - EPP) and Gemology (Paper Piecing).  We had frequent get togethers via Zoom to discuss the process and show each other our progress.  Below are some examples of members products.

The Lucy Boston blocks are a fun challenge in terms of fussy cutting to create interesting designs and color interaction.  They are also nice because one can do the hand-sewing just about anywhere!

Robin made this colorful table mat out of her Lucy Boston blocks.

Karen's Lucy Boston blocks focused on blue and green fabrics and she was very prolific!

Next are René's multicolored Lucy Boston blocks.
