October 10, 2024, General Membership Meeting Recap

 

This meeting was our 10^th Anniversary Celebration Event!

 

The meeting was led by Helen.

There were 35 members in attendance, plus two guests.

Raffle Winners

·       Mary, one of our guests, won the door prize, a batik layer cake.

·       Patty M won the raffle for the Slimline3 table lamp.

·       Marie won the raffle for the GoodSprits FQB by Ruby Star Society.

Events and Programming (Laurie K, and Susan H)

At our next meeting in November, Martha will give an interactive presentation on Color Theory. Martha asked everyone to bring any color tools (color cards, wheels, etc.) they have, plus a piece of ”ugly” fabric to play with. 

The December meeting will be our Holiday Party.

Communications (Brenda and Susie)

Our QuiltCon 2025 Community Outreach challenge quilt: “Lines Galore.” Members have completed all the blocks needed for the quilt! There will be an assembly day scheduled soon to put them all together.

Charity. No update.

Retreats (Ophelia)

·       Our Fall Retreat is coming soon! It will be held November 7-10, 2024, at the St. Methodius Center in Contoocook, NH.

·       One double room space is available. Contact Ophelia for details if you (or a friend you know) would like that spot.

·       Details on the retreat were sent with the October Meeting Reminder/Raffle email. Scroll to the end of the email.

·       Especially important things to know: (1) No personal ironing stations are allowed. The electricity in the side of the room we will set up our machines cannot support irons. There will be irons and large ironing boards for everyone to use.  You may bring your favorite iron if you wish. (2) There are no design walls provided. You can bring a portable one or a flannel tablecloth to tape to a wall with Painter’s Tape.

SHOW AND TELL

Captions below photos give details for each project or quilt.

1.       Mary Lou showed her Lighthouse Inn quilt made in this summer’s Modern Quilt Studio quiltalong. It was quilted by Ophelia – we hope you can see the unique quilting in the photo.

2.       Simone showed a knit t-shirt she made for her sister, which she completed by drafting a pattern from her sister’s favorite ready-made t-shirt.

3.       Tracy showed an applique heart block she made in a class with Simone, in which she tested out various machine applique stitches. She is planning to include one in her Wanderer’s Wife quilt by Jen Kingwell.

4.       Stephanie showed us three pillowcases she made with Halloween fabric for her grandchildren.

5.       Maura showed us her Layer Cake Sampler quilt by Material Girl Quilts.

6.       Patty K showed us three completed WIPS! The first was a rail fence quilt she made from our scrap exchange meeting activity.

7.       The second was a sampler quilt made from one of our year-long block exchanges.

8.       And the third was a Trip Around the World quilt.

9.       Laurie M showed us her Diamonds and Hexies quilt. She hated the pattern so much she wouldn’t tell us the name of the quilt or the designer! She reworked most of the pattern. It was a WIP!

10.   Ophelia showed us four quilts. First, a quilt she made for her daughter who is getting married. This is an enlarged Ski Trip panel quilt by Frannie B. Quilt Company.

11.   Next, her Wayfinder quilt by Brooke Shankland of eudaimonia studio.

12.   Next, her enlarged Balderdash quilt by Emma Jean Jansen.

13.   Last was her Daylesford quilt from Jen Kingwell’s Quilt Recipes book. This was a WIP!

14.   Chelsea showed two quilts. First was her version of the Balderdash quilt by Emma Jean Jansen.

15.   And a Flying Geese quilt, a WIP!

16.   Michelle C showed us her Kitty Cats quilt from Cluck Cluck Sew.

17.   Diane showed us two WIPS! First her Taffy Quilt designed by Coral + Co.

18.   And then her Sparkle quilt designed by Twiggy and Opal.

19.   Robin showed her finished scrappy quilt (designed from a quilt she saw on Pinterest) with a striped binding.

20.   And Helen showed her Passiflora quilt by Hayley Grzych of Bernina.

Thank you so much for telling us the names of the quilts and pattern designers for your masterpieces. Extra special thanks to Ophelia who copied the first page of the patterns she used. It makes it easy to compile these Show & Tell notes and serves as a great resource for all of us!

GUILD WIP CHALLENGE

Julie had three completed WIPS, and amazingly won the first and second gift cards for the challenge! Lynn won the third.

The Anniversary Celebration

Our celebration started with a sparkling beverage toast by Helen, followed by a Member Bingo game. Patty M won the Bingo! That was so much fun!

Then, we enjoyed the cake and other goodies, while socializing and voting for Anniversary Quilt Challenge entries.

Anniversary Quilt Challenge. There were 12 amazing entries.

   ·       Best of Show: Robin

Member Gift. The Board decided to purchase Scout Tote Bags for every member. Members claimed their bags in cohorts, defined by how many years they have belonged to the guild. We still have most of the original 10 founding members! (We will make efforts to deliver bags to members who could not attend the meeting.)

The Board thanks all members for your supportive, friendly, and inclusive words and actions throughout the duration of the guild. What an amazing group we are! Here’s to another wonderful 10 years!

GUILD BUSINESS

2025 Board of Directors

Helen talked about the Board and Nominating Committee Interest Survey that just went out. Please check your email and take the survey within the next week. The survey asks about your interest in serving as President, Treasurer, or Secretary, or in Communications (2 positions), and Programming (3 positions), next year or in the future.

We are looking for 3-5 members (who are not interested in serving on the Board in 2025) to serve on a new Nominating Committee that will create an Election ballot for the Board of Directors for next year. The Committee will use the information from the survey to interview members interested in serving on the Board, and create the ballot. 

Guild Income and Expenses

In the membership survey, many of you expressed an  interest in learning how our dues money was spent. We distributed a handout that included charts and lists of our 2023 incomes and expenses. We hope this answers your questions! If you have any questions about the handout, please contact any Board member.

• We apologize for the delay in getting the August meeting recap out. We are working on it!

• QuiltCon 2025 Community Outreach challenge quilt: “Lines Galore.” Thanks to everyone who already completed their blocks! All blocks need to be completed by the October meeting. If you can’t make this meeting, you can drop your blocks off at Ophelia‘s house.

Other News from the Modern Quilt Guild

• Quilt submissions for QuiltCon 2025 are now open. Wouldn’t it be wonderful to have a quilt accepted for the show?

• Signups for the Mini Quilt Swap will open September 25, 2024. You do not need to attend QuiltCon to participate.

Charity.

Leslie reported that eight quilts are soon to be donated; 4 need binding.

Retreats (Ophelia)

• Space is still available for our Fall Retreat, which will be held November 7-10, 2024 at the St. Methodius Center in Contoocook, NH. Contact Ophelia for details if you or a guest wants to attend.

• If you will be attending, start thinking about projects to bring. Make kits and collect all your supplies! A general guideline is to bring more than you think you will work on!

Jen Sorenson gave a wonderful presentation about her personal quilt journey. She brought dozens of quilts, plus patterns to sell. She encouraged us to participate in fabric or quilt style challenges, to stretch our skills and gain confidence.

1. Sonia showed us a dragonfly wall hanging. She showed her work at the Canterbury Fair in July, and will be at the Artisan Market at the Hollis Old Home Days event September 20 & 21, 2024.

   
   
   

2. Stephanie showed us the charity quilt she made as part of Simone’s charity sew day for the Merrimack Hospice House. The quilt is called “Sew Quick,” one of Sew Café’s quilts that Simone enlarged for the project.

   
   
   

3. Stephanie also showed a black and white and red quilt she started over a year ago.

   
   
   

4. Beth L showed us her Kamala quilt, a pattern by Modern Quilt Studio.

   
   
   

5. Beth also showed her detailed “Call Me Crazy Quilt” that started with 6” blocks from a Sentimental Stitches online quiltalong. She added settings (inspired by the Trail Mix quilt) and blocks from EQ8.

   
   
   

6. Lynn showed a charity quilt and pillow case she made from the Town Square pattern by Fabric Café, with glow-in-the-dark fabric. This was one of her WIPs!

   
   
   

7. Julie showed us two quilts. Her Meadowlands quilt by Then Came June, made with Cherrywood fabrics.

   
   
   

8. And her Jelly Forest quilt from the “Strip Your Stash” book by Gudrun Erla.
