June Events with Amy Garro

We are thrilled to announce that we will be hosting quilter and teacher Amy Garro for a weekend in June. Amy blogs about her creative journey at 13 Spools and released her first book last year: Paper Pieced Modern.

On Saturday, June 11, Amy will be conducting an intermediate-level paper-piecing workshop at Quilted Threads in Henniker, NH. This all-day class will focus on sewing Icy Waters, the quilt design featured on the cover of Paper Pieced Modern. Cost for the event for members is $100/person and includes lunch. (Participants are also required to own a copy of Paper Pieced Modern. We will be placing an order for books in the spring.) You can sign up for this event at the February guild meeting.

Then join us on Sunday, June 12, for an afternoon trunk show with Amy at Messiah Lutheran Church in Amherst, NH. Participants will be encouraged to view Amy's designs up close at this event that will feature 15 of her amazing quilts. Admission for this event for NHMQG members is free. Admission for the public is $5/person.

We hope you'll join us for these events. Amy's signature designs and free-motion quilting are exceptional. The weekend is sure to be both educational and inspiring!

January Meeting Reminder

Our first meeting of 2016 will take place on Tuesday the 19th!

Our new board members have some great ideas for the group that they will be sharing.
If you didn't pay your dues for 2016 yet now is the time.

Everyone should really bring their check books to this meeting anyway because it's time to book our spring retreat!

Our spring retreat is April 14-17 and will be at the Franciscan Guest House in Kennebunkport, ME. You can stay for 2 or 3 nights and single or double rooms are available. Pricing is:

Single Room:
3 nights - $310
2 nights - $210

Double Room:
3 nights - $210
2 nights - $145

The retreat costs includes your room, breakfast each day and a 6 foot long table for sewing.

In December we passed out fabric to make blocks as part of the Janome Challenge. If you made blocks please bring them in January. If you are going to get started on your blocks this weekend, here is the post thatoutlines that challenge!

We have some great raffle items for January so don't forget your cash ladies! Items to be raffled are...

Blueberry Park by Karen Lewis was so popular at our Yankee Swap that we had to get some for our raffle.

Another coveted swap item was some Tula Pink fabric so we decided to raffle off her coloring book as well!

The last lovely item for this raffle is a classic charm pack!

December Show-N-Tell

Even though our December meeting was our Holiday party and Yankee Swap, we still had a lively Show-N-Tell!

A beautiful zipper bag made from essex linen that Janice used to make a quilt for her nieces' 16th birthday.

Nancy started this jacket 10 years ago and just started garment sewing again, go Nancy! The fabric for the jacket came from the our local Malden Mills. If you are not familiar with the Malden Mills here is a quick history lesson: they were the original manufacturer of Polartec Polar Fleece!

Mary Jean followed the tutorial for making an ottoman from Anna Grahams' (aka Noodlehead!) book Handmade Style.  She said this was really easy and had most of the room inspired to make their own quilty furniture.

Mary Jean also shared her version of Elizabeth Hartman's Tokyo Subway quilt. She made it larger than the pattern indicated and we think it looks great!

Annick participated in a quilt challenge where you were given the name of a song that had a color in the name and you had to make something with that color. Can you guess her song from the quilt? (see the end of this post for the answer!)

It's that time of year! Here's Lisa with a table runner she made as a gift. The pattern is from Sew Kind of Wonderful and we think this runner is ALL kinds of wonderful!

Here is the front of Marie's quilt for the Michael Miller challenge.

And the equally beautiful back!

This quilt was made by Marie's sister and Lisa quilted it!

Alexandra and Carolyn show off their finished projects from the Jackie Gehring workshop.

Dess calls this her Ozzy Amish quilt because of all the black. The front and back are equally as impressive!

Carol used a bunch of different polka dot fabrics she had to make this quilt top. We can't wait to see her finished quilt!

Go Alexandra! This baby bag was her first ever zipper, inner pocket and slider!

She was on such a roll that she made this bag too!

Denise was playing peek-a-boo during show and tell! This is her Tula Pink challenge quilt that she worked on with her sisters. I wonder if any of her fabric winnings from retreat made it into the quilt?

Here are two of the four throw sized quilts Michelle made to gift this holiday season. She worked on the rainbow one at retreat so we were all excited to see how it turned out.

Carolanne used a tutorial written by Michelle to create this really easy quilt top using jelly rolls.

Beth made this quilt for her dad and found 90 inch wide minky to use for the backing!

We held off on posting this until after Christmas because as you can see there were quite a few gifts being shown off before they made their way to their new homes! Did you make any handmade gifts this year?

*Annick's song was Brown Eyes!

NHMQG presents.... Controlled Chaos

NHMQG Presents
Controlled Chaos

Lisa Teichmann, of Garden Gate Quilting
has completed our quilt and it is just fabulous! The co-chairs received little glimpses of it throughout the process.

How exciting is that! She handed the quilt back and said, "You should block it." Having no idea what that meant, she sent us several links on how to block and we blocked our quilt.

The quilt was squared and René Therrien volunteered to add the scrappy binding.
Sleeve and label were added and we have Controlled Chaos!

Now the biggest challenge of all will be deciding who to donate it too. Any suggestions?

2015 Holiday Party and Yankee Swap

As part of our December meeting we had a holiday party and Yankee Swap! The swap was "modern" themed and everyone went home with a fabulous gift. There were fabric bundles, books, zipper pouches, handmade holiday decor, mugs and some lovely bags.

Here are some pictures of the gifts being chosen, opened and of course, some of the goodies!

There were two gifts in particular that got swapped quite a few times. A blue blueberry park bundle by Karen Lewis (view the entire line here) and a set of two Modern Quilting books!

After the Yankee Swap we indulged in so many delicious treats.

Thank you to everyone who made a treat and for the creativity that all members put into their gifts!
